On Monday 17 August YTN welcomed around 60 young professionals and students to the Radisson on Flagstaff Gardens to learn about the opportunities and challenges of running a tourism business. We were happy to have field trips from both William Angliss Institute and Holmesglen Institute attend the evening to further their knowledge and networks in the industry.
Despina Karatzias of Institute of Excellence shared her journey of leaving a job she loved to start her own business. Despina says “following your dreams, leaving a secure job and stepping into the uncertainty of starting your own business is NOT easy, if it were ‘easy’ everyone would be doing it and YOU are not everyone”. Jessica Gilchrist inspired us with her story of persistence and hard work which has today brought her to be Director of Chocoholic Tours. Jess highlighted the importance of knowing your numbers, securing a mentor (or two!) and setting goals.
Monique Bayer, winner of Young Achiever Award at the 2014 Victorian Tourism Awards set the group to work by asking “what lights you up?”, “does your job let you explore that?” and “could it?” Three questions that have the ability to open you up to so many possibilities. Monique owns Walk Melbourne Tours, has published a book ‘Devouring Melbourne‘; and is about to publish her second book.
After spending 7 years at Gray Line Kirsty Grace began Melbourne Sports Tours and Outlet Shopping Tours with husband Anthony. Kirsty spoke about life balance, educational opportunities and her upcoming projects, which include building three new travel websites. Kirsty highlighted the fact an idea can take time to develop, such was the case with her first business.
